Notes from GA 2003
By Lois Shepherd Porter, FUSS delegate to GA:
This was my fifth GA. As usual, it was exciting and emotionally draining. We stayed with a UU family in the Roslindale section of Boston, which turned out to be a delight. We enjoyed sharing the events of the previous day over breakfast each morning. Personal highlights for me included Tom Hayden's talk entitled "The Threat to Democracy From the War on Terrorism", George V aillant's "Aging Well: Some Surprising Guideposts" and Jonathan Kozol's "Savage Inequalities", referring to the difference between inner city and suburban schools. Mr Kozol commented that "charity is no substitute for justice". I was pleased that the revised and much improved statement of conscience regarding Economic Globalization was passed, and happy that my choice -- "Criminal Justice and Prison Reform" was selected by delegates to be the new study issue for the next two years.
