Flaming ChaliceFirst Unitarian Society of Schenectady

Dear Prospective Director of Religious Education,

I am really looking forward to working with our next Director of Religious Education in a collegial way.  You would be an integral part of our staff team and valued for your strong contributions in sharing the ministry with the laity, staff and myself. We envision a transition to lifelong learning, moving toward a collaborative lifespan program that would involve all generations learning and serving together. We need your help in realizing that vision!

I have been the minister of the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady (FUSS) for a year and a half.  This is a congregation with a strong history and a high level of community support for a variety of social justice programs. We are proud of the Religious Education program for children and youth and how our former DRE, Mindy Whisenhunt, professionalized it as she completed her Master’s Level credentialing with the UUA and brought that expertise to us.

We have a strong OWL and Spirit Play program at many age levels. We offer Coming of Age and have an amazing youth group.  The energy and love shared by our children and youth is a wonder to behold.  We worship in a distinctive building and enjoy strong leadership within the congregation.

Outside of the church, this is a great community in which to live. The Capital Region of New York is a smaller metro area located in a beautiful setting with rivers, mountains, and lakes nearby.  Schenectady has a world class theater and a proud history in the development of electricity. Albany is the state capital with many urban attractions.  Having come here from larger metro areas, I’ve found it remarkably easy to get around and love the beauty and friendliness of this area.

We also have a thriving UU Metro group consisting of the four UU congregations in the Capital Region: Schenectady, Albany, Saratoga Springs, and Glens Falls. We are doing exciting things together to grow Unitarian Universalism in this area. The St. Lawrence District is a very active district with excellent leadership (the president is a member of FUSS).

There’s so much to love here – I invite you to take a close look at what we have to offer our next DRE.  I look forward you sharing your passion with us.

Cordially,

(The Rev.) Priscilla Richter
