“A sad misfortune once there did Schenectady befall”
:The History behind the Schenectady Massacre

Kathryn Weller

On a cold February night in 1690, 114 French troops with 16 Algonquin and 80 Sault Native People descended upon Schenectady, New York. During the ensuing hours, 60 people lost their lives while 27 men and boys were taken captive. For the past three hundred years, historians have disputed the events of that night. On May 29, join Kathryn Weller, curator of the Schenectady County Historical Society, as she explores the early history of Schenectady and how the frontier community became embroiled in a European War.

Kathryn Weller is Curator of Collections at the Schenectady County Historical Society. Her Masters Degree is from the Cooperstown Graduate Program with a focus in Museum Education. Her Bachelors Degree is from the University of Mary Washington with a focus in Historic Preservation.

This month the steering committee will meet on the second Monday, May 12 at Carol Marchewka’s at 7:15. Additional members are encouraged to attend, as the committee is always looking for new faces. Women who attend steering committee meetings have been heard to say that the meetings are fun and an informal way to deepen friendships, as well as a way to help EBWA run smoothly. If interested in coming to the meeting, email Judy Clough at mimaclough@ yahoo.com.

February’s program by Ruth Dibelius about the efforts of Friends of the Kayderosseras in preserving the Creek and surrounding lands, was enlivened by many questions from EBWA women. Ruth’s story reminded us how much one person can do.

Save the Date: September 27 for the EBWA Retreat at Stillpoint..
