The Legend of the Holly and the Ivy

To the Druids, the holly was the tree never deserted by the sun. To the Romans, Photo: Roger the Jester

holly was especially connected to the Saturnalia as a token of good wishes and good will. The thorns of the holly were believed to repel evil spirits. Native Americans planted holly as a protection around dwellings and used it during childbirth to ease pain. Roger the Jester entertains the Royal Court.
Ivy, with its spiral, winding growth, is another religious symbol. Ivy leaves form the poet's crown as well as the wreath of Bacchus, to whom the plant was dedicated. The vine is symbolic of peace and plenty, luck and strength. The leaves represent mirth and intoxication.
