A Yuletide Revel - Medieval Merry-Making to Welcome the Sun

This is the year that the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady (FUSS) celebrates again the festival of the winter solstice. In a tradition going back nearly a decade at FUSS, and many centuries in Europe, we will join together in theater, music, dance, and visual arts to enliven the longest night and shortest day of the year. At FUSS this celebration takes place every other year, drawing participants and delighted audiences from Schenectady and the surrounding region. The cast, musicians, artists, writers, costumers, artisans, and many supporters are always very ably coordinated by the producer, Gareth Griffiths, Music Director at FUSS.

Welcome Yule! A Christmas Revel

A Yuletide Revel began as an idea for a project that would unite many of us in a common goal, and one that would utilize the many talents of this congregation. The idea slowly became a reality when the Performing Arts Committee gave a thumbs up response; Bob and Sylvia Briber gave immediate and enthusiastic Photo: Gary Griffiths and choir support and just Plunged In - editing, shaping, writing, casting and directing a Mummer's play, devising and choreographing a format, writing publicity materials, planning a Repast, etc.

Thanks to funding from the William Kleinhandler, MD Trust, we were able to welcome in the holidays with an amazing program of music, mummers, marshmallows and a little madness! With the Great Hall looking quite like a medieval Great Manor Hall (thanks to the colorful shields made by the RE Classes), we celebrated the season with laughter and singing and a feeling that we hadn't had such fun in a long time!

In 1994, the second celebration tried to top the first one. Succeeding productions in 1996, 1998, and 2000 have each added refinements and enhancements. Many of the elements are carried on from year to year, but always with variations to delight the audience, who are steeped in the tradition and deeply appreciate both the constants and the changes.

Program Notes from a recent Yuletide Revel listed some of the elements essential to the mix. Most of these pleasures can be expected again in the December 2002 performances. The featured attractions (illustrated here with photos from 2000) will include:

The Mummers' Play: St. George and the Dragon

The Boar's Head

The Wassayl Bolle

The Legend of the Holly and the Ivy
